Day of the Dead

A community outreach project for Mexican ‘Day of the Dead’ festivities at The British Museum.

Sophie Charalambous worked with Emily Tracy (Light Artist) on this collaborative community and festival project in conjunction with Mandinga Arts.

Working with homeless young people from New Horizons day centre and with members of Latin American Golden Years centre, they made 2 large scale puppets, costumes and performances for the ‘Day of The Dead’ celebrations and procession at The British Museum which over 34,000 visitors attended. The project involved many different aspects of creativity including puppetry, choreography, costume and construction.

“I must say a big thank you for all your work this past month with the project. Your hard work and commitment resulted in the most enjoyable workshops I have been involved in and this showed in the enthusiasm of the individuals taking part and the creativity and quality of work the two groups produced. Your rapport with both the groups and your ability to engage them in the workshops ensured both the workshops and the day at the Museum were memorable events for all involved.”
Harvinder Bahra, Learning and Audiences Co-Ordinator at the British Museum November 2009
